Saturday Six: Week 012

It’s official — the sun is teasing the summer’s first piece of ass.

There’s a lightness in the air. Fresh blossom lines our streets. City-boys are loosening their ties at noon to take lunch al fresco. Children are running gaily through parks and the flutter of birdsong cheers the ear. Seasonal affective disorder is relaxing its aching grip and the nation’s collective misery is lifting — the world seems alright, thanks.

So what’s soundtracking spring’s joyous arrival? BR HQ has been a hub of all-day springtime listening: yacht rock compilations; James Pants’ breezy new Stones Throw LP; hazy New Age and fragrant Korean spa music from our hyper-mellow Local Action ambient session — the list goes on.

With the howling depths of winters far over our shoulder, it’s fine time to recline in the hours and hours of sunshine gold waiting in our archives. To begin, here’s a palette of only the light and easy: six effortlessly feel-good recordings to welcome in the first of the summer sun. Enjoy.

Lakuti (Berlin; March 26, 2014)

On an early spring afternoon last year, founder of Uzuri Recordings and supreme selector, Lakuti, took us through some deeply soulful cuts live from her apartment in Berlin. There aren’t enough superlatives tbh.

Andras Fox & Oscar Key Sung (Melbourne; March 6, 2014)

The alchemy for maximum chill is a simple brew: take one New Age connoisseur Andras Fox in tandem with an avant-R&B auteur like Oscar Key Sung and place them on top of a sun-splashed rooftop in Melbourne… in matching Pharell hats. The rest will work itself out.

Peaking Lights – In Stereo (London; 22 December, 2014)

If Indris Dunis’ palm-tree print jumpsuit doesn’t say impending summer to you, I’m not sure what will.

Benedek (LA; 4 June, 2014)

An unsung relic of our deep catalogue: PPU wunderkind and Dam Funk collaborator Benedek bending out a funkified hardware set from up in the LA hills. So vg.

Azymuth (London; June 24, 2013)

One for the heads: the unfathomably influential Brazilian trio Azymuth performing ‘Last Summer in Rio’ live from Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Basement. Precious footage, indeed.

Bill Brewster (Croatia; September 12, 2013)

As an off-shoot of Croatia’s Unknown Festival, we hosted a day from Boiler Room Island. This one from the ever-reliable Bill Brewster is all you’ll need on a long day in the sun: rare disco, balearic house and much more still. Dive in.
