Bedouin Records

An hour of dark and cerebral but stunningly beautiful electronic surround from a "sonic tribe" gathered together in the desert of the UAE.

About this mix

Bedouin is an independent music and art imprint being run solely by Salem Rashid, United Arab Emirates based but seeking out talent worldwide.

The intent is to release music unconditionally of the geographical location or background of each artist and create a connection of their own unique disparate sound, like a sonic tribe (or something along those lines!).

The art that goes in the sleeves and on other projects is one of the main aims as well, mostly commissioned from artists with a rebel cause, or just creative individuals that don't want to be corrupted by the systematic abuse of the corporate world.

The following mix is simply a collage of some of the tracks that you will hear this year (2015) on Bedouin. Assembled through following the gospel of real music and without obvious influences, the youth and the OGs alike all need to be brought to audiences and properly heard.

In no particular order this includes music by Eomac, Ling, Healing Force Project, Hypnobeat (aka James Dean Brown & Helena Hauff), Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio, Saeed, J.Tijn, Imaginary Forces and Roly Porter.

Salem Rashid

Boiler Room says...

When we heard that Bedouin Records had a busy release schedule for 2015, asking Salem Rashid to put together an Upfront mix for us was a complete no-brainer. When we saw that schedule included glorious one-offs like Jamal Moss, Helena Hauff, Imaginary Forces and J.Tijn, we were positively salivating. And when the mix came in as a full hour of braincell-frying sound, we just died of joy.

We normally go for labels that have had a little time to settle in, to establish a clear identity for themselves - but despite being barely a year old, Bedouin have managed to do just that in record time. In 2014, their first three releases (four if you include a cassette-only mixtape by Bristol legend Krust) were wildly diverse examples of electronic sound-making, but somehow managed to create a fiercely distinctive aesthetic.

Bedouin touches on techno, ambient, modern composition, noise and more. It is consistently dark and cerebral in its approach, sometimes scarily so, but crucially this is counterbalanced by a palpable love for sound. The Lakker remix of Allison Chanic's "Painlessly in Love" which appeared on the label's first 12" was easily my favourite track of 2014, managing to fuse the fuzzed-out melodic bliss of Selected Ambient Works-era Aphex Twin with scouring ultra-high definition texture, to make an impossibly vivid flying dream of a tune.

This mix manages to take you there too. It's not a dancefloor blend - despite some hefty bangers - and it's definitely not easy listening. But in its constant switchbacks and sharp left turns, it delivers the same consistent intensity of experience that has marked out Bedouin releases from the beginning. Rashid says his aim is to create a "sonic tribe", and somehow among all the rollercoaster variation of people and sounds in play here, it really feels like he's achieving that.
