Mndsgn, or Ringgo, as he’s legally known, is a name you may by now be familiar with – if not through the previous Breakfast Shows we’ve done with him, then perhaps through his 2014 release on the eclectic label Stones Throw.
While he’s been cropping up on numerous ‘best newcomer’ lists on the web over the past year (not to mention our own Best of 2014), the truth of the matter is he’s been steadily releasing music for many years now; most of which is readily available online, just a few clicks away. His style has expertly developed, ranging from sample heavy music to ambient or spiritual jazz, as Leaving Records cleverly describes it.
The idea for the breakfast shows stemmed largely from a time when we lived together (shoutout 1514 Baxter) – he moved in with my roommate (the equally talented Alima Jennings with whom he’s collaborated with in the past, too) and I, took some time off from his former day job at Guitar Center, and completed that very same Stones Throw Yawn Zen release during this period.
Mornings in particular were a pleasure – waking up slightly groggily to the smell of trees coupled with the most magical sounds consisting of samples or beats made the previous night, audible through the thin walls of our small bungalow. This is something we’ve been trying to capture and share with you: 1st with Knxwledge, then 2nd time round with Swarvy as guests.
For this upcoming third episode, we’re expanding it a little beyond playing hazy beats and you’ll have the opportunity to hear him narrate the music he’s playing (which, trust me, is gold!) and delve a little deeper in an interview with the Los Angeles-via-Virginia artist Ahnnu (who also releases under the alias Cakedog, and most recently doubled up with fellow LA-based producer Knxwledge for a juke/footwork release under a joint alias Vato Gato).
They discuss the music scene in Virginia and beyond, play tracks from both of Ahnnu’s aliases, and much more – so make sure to set your reminder and tune in for Breakfast with Ringgo 003.
