The tendency to pigeonhole and micro-categorise is a dangerous one in all walks of life. To have a go at breaking this mould, Boiler Room are clubbing up with Germany’s prestigious car emporium Audi. To celebrate Audi’s unveiling of their new Q2 model, we’re heading to Berlin on April 6th for an all-star party broadcast: Âme (with both live and DJ sets) will be joined by Digitalism, Nicole Moudaber and Breakbot.
In the run-up to proceedings, we asked the Digitalism duo to share some of their favourite tracks from unfamiliar territory. It’s a rare chance for them to share the music they love; the tracks that fall out of their usual remit. From King Kenny to Bollywood classics – Digitalism’s Jence and Isi have really kept us guessing.
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam “Chakkani Chukkala”
Jence – “I don’t know what this is, what it’s about or how I found it – but it’s great.”
Elias Rahbani “I Love You Lina”
Isi – “Love this track from the 1970s Arabic world.”
Nami Shimada “Sunshower (Larry Levan Remix)”
Jence – “We discovered this track last year while checking out old work from Larry Levan (RIP), reminiscing on New York’s club scene and the Paradise Garage. He influenced so many of us as DJs, makers and consumers of house music. This track is especially interesting because it’s a remix of Japanese artist Nami Shimada, and the track itself is in Japanese too.”
Johnick “Columbia”
Isi – “So many good records from Henry Street Music, especially from Johnick and about Columbia where we have good memories of playing.”
Fuck Buttons “Stalker”
Jence – “I love Fuck Buttons. They deliver these huge walls of sound and big noisy electric collages. I assume they eat through a lot of amps, cables and speakers at their gigs.”
Thomas Bangalter “Club Soda”
Isi – “One club soda please. Perfect track for everything. Such good vibes here.”
Kendrick Lamar “Money Trees”
Jence – “Kendrick is great. ‘Money Trees’ is particularly lengthy and epic. It also samples another great band, Beach House. The production on all Kendrick albums has been amazing. This song soundtracked most of our time spent in LA a few years ago. I grew up with lots of hip hop including North-West Coast acts like Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics. This really reminds me of those early 1990s days.”
Shock Machine “Shock Machine”
Isi – “Perfect morning soundtrack.”
Sunbeam “Outside World”
Jence – “I grew up with quite a lot of trance music. This was one of the biggest trance tracks of the 1990s, I’d say. The genre must have had an impact on the way our music sounds, with its big riffs and epic chords.”
Brame & Hamo “Kebab Dreams”
Isi – “I discovered this amazing track in the vinyl store and fell in love.”
