Florian Kupfer “Erika”

Re-emerging after his menacing “Explora (Slave)” release via Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint, Berlin-based DJ and producer Florian Kupfer is back on the heavyweight sub-label with his sixth solo EP Unfinished.

The lo-fi techno explorer indulges in his passion for improvised hardware jams, which he uses to render the musical landscape with eerie electronic shades. His Unfinished EP exemplifies such explorations with three smouldering club tracks and the stunningly sinister “Erika”.

In this track, Florian veers from happier house tones, creating a piece that blends harrowing and lamenting sounds into a tangibly sentimental broken ballad. Consistently whirring line noise and injections of static build an air of turmoil. Offbeat bass tones resonate like a skipping record. Relentless ticking gives the claustrophobic feeling of a software jam, while anguish-soaked vocals soar overhead. Each component contributes to an overarching idea that somehow, somewhere, something is misplaced.

Kupfer’s “Erika” identifies directly with chaos, melancholy, and disillusionment; resulting in Unfinished‘s most stirring and disturbing moment.

Released via Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint on July 22nd, followed by the digital release on August 12th.
