A Special Delivery from Jamie xx

No waffle, no spin – something very special has been passed into our hands: a preview of Jamie xx’s new single “All Under One Roof Raving”. In advance of the full premiere tonight at 8pm (BST) on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show – and, naturally, Jamie’s imminent return to Boiler Room from Young Turks HQ on Monday – we’re psyched to air a snippet of what’s to come.

Although built on a similar foundation to the stellar material we’ve become accustomed to hearing from Jamie, ‘All Under One Roof Raving” is, well, stranger at its core than pretty much anything he’s used as single material previously. The quintessential tropes remain – steel drums, ponderous pads, a well-rounded club bump – but there’s more chaos present: the stuttering rhythm is periodically pulled back to reveal a grizzled underbelly of static-seeped bass, with curious vocal snippets peppering the mix.

The samples Jamie works into both the teaser and full 6m version are lifted from Mark Leckie’s captivating 1999 film short “Fiorruci Made Me Hardcore”. Seeking to expose the inherent weirdness of youth culture, Leckie draws a throughline between different dancefloor eras, from Northern Soul right up to happy hardcore, via unearthed VHS footage and snatched fragments of eerily familiar club sounds: bells and whistles; amen breaks and 303 squiggles; faint outlines of classic drum patterns used by Nightmares On Wax and Kraftwerk. Visually presented to us like disquieting CCTV footage – complete with VCR timings overlaid throughout – it repurposes weekend clubbing as a form of cult ritual; which makes sense, in a curious kind of way.

The three most direct spoken words segments Jamie fed into this forwarded teaser clip are each poignant in their own way: talk of “the London scene”; a disembodied voice doting on “laughing and joking”; and the titular line: “All Under One Roof Raving”. That’s all going to make a lot more sense by this evening: make sure you get locked into Annie Mac on Radio 1 from 8pm BST to get the world-first play of the track in all its glory.

And don’t miss Jamie xx returning to play a one-off Boiler Room this Monday from the balcony of Young Turks’ London office, with NTS mainstay Jon Rust going back-to-back with our very own Tasker. For further info on that very special session: HEAD HERE.
