It’s been just over three years since Peanut Butter Wolf first inaugurated the Los Angeles leg of Boiler Room with a Stones Throw takeover (yes, that fateful show he suggested I open, subsequently landing me an offer to join the Boiler Room team). He’s played once since; a behemoth of a show which saw him delivering a marathon 12-hour all vinyl set from his living room on the 12th of December 2012, as a culmination of his famed numerology series — making it the longest set in Boiler Room’s history, until Derek Plaslaiko recently beat it by a cool twelve minutes.
He returns Thursday, letting his curatorial voice shine through with a carefully chosen lineup. A true versatile selector, he’ll be treating us to a VJ set this time round; something that’s not to be missed, for his trove of perfectly matching, self-discovered rare music videos and bizarre clips is seemingly limitless.
NxWorries consists of Knxwledge and Anderson Paak (FKA Breezi Lovejoy if you get down like that). They go above and beyond just a production and vocals duo – Paak a seasoned vocalist and drummer par excellence, Knxwledge an artist in a league entirely of his own creation. They’re what I like to call that rare, once in a generation pairing. One can draw parallels to Madlib and Freddie Gibbs; not musically but metaphorically, in the sense that both artists bring out a quality in one another that seems otherwise inaccessible to both individually or with someone else.
I slotted the demo of the above track in my Stones Throw podcast back when they were still nameless (or tentatively dubbed Hghland.Paak by Jeff Jank, a nod to the neighborhood Stones Throw’s HQ is in), and was inundated by inquiries about what it was and when it’s coming out on the daily. To say they’re ones to watch would be an understatement; once you’ve heard their material you’ll find it hard to pry your eyes (or rather, ears) away. Their debut effort will appear on the label sometime in 2015.
Mild High Club is the creation of Los Angeles based Alexander Brettin, who has previously recorded and performed with Ariel Pink and Silk Rhodes. He has a debut LP coming up on Stones Throw, too, and will be orchestrating a DJ set.
Also joining us will be Vex Ruffin, and the obscure black wave/synth boogie funk artist Prophet, who vanished after his release Right On Time on Treasure Records (recently reissued, by PPU, naturally).
