The energy flowing out from Madrid’s independent music scene is unavoidable right now. Alongside Spanish trap and Latin-infused club beats, Reggaeton is playing virtually everywhere in the city, from taxis to student nights, high-end clubs and basement bars. The Puerto-Rican sound is finally getting recognition in Spain, after years of being looked down upon by the music industry and mainstream media. The artists and DJs behind this movement also known as Perreo (that’s twerking in Spanish) are DIY out of necessity. We spent time with them to document this sonic explosion, and to see how they’re looking to collaborate to transform this moment of hype into something sustainable.
Stay tuned for the next part of our Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music 2019 project, where we’ll be going back to work with the community in Madrid, to help shape the future of the scene.
