2016 was a symbolic year in the DIY and independent aesthetic. From Frank Ocean's self-released smash 'Blond' and Skepta's Mercury Prize win, to MIA's decision to do a London press tour touching only on the city's emergent DIY radio stations, to increasing numbers of artists turning down major label record deals and focusing on building revenue from merchandise and sales of physical music. We kick off our day of discussion on the future of the music industry with thought leaders in the DIY aesthetic: Kieran Yates, journalist with The Guardian, I-D, Dazed and founder and editor in chief of British Values Zine; Aly Gillani, label boss at First Word Records and label liaison for Bandcamp; Lily Mercer, DJ & presenter on Rinse FM and Beats1 and founder and editor in chief of Viper Magazine; Anastazja Moser, DJ and co-founder of Berlin Community Radio and one of the industry's most respected analysts, Mark Mulligan, Managing Director at Midia Research.
