In Stereo: The Range

14 Apr 2016, 14:00 - 14:30 BST

James Hinton's use of YouTube is different from yours.

Unlike the aimless drifting of most people online, his digs are fuelled by genuine discovery. Potential, Hinton's newly released album on Domino, uses YouTube-sourced vocal samples as a backbone. Not just any clips though. It's a project that sees The Range as collagist, focusing on the unsung and unsigned heroes of the www's nooks and crannies. Each have their story to tell, and each narrative is duly reimagined with a new soundtrack provided by Hinton.

Now it has an apt accompaniment as part of Boiler Room's In Stereo series. With help from visual artist, Nitin Lachhani, the session combines analogue and digital television in totally newfound ways: an orchestra of TVs being used as theremins, YouTube clips fed through 240p mini-screens. It's a multi-sensory experience that befits Hinton's own elastic approach and all available in high definition.
