The Boiler Room x Ballantine's True Music Forums are a space for the international music community to connect and exchange ideas. The third Forum will be held in Johannesburg on June 20th, the day before the final event of the True Music Africa tour.
The evening opens with a conversation with Grace LaDoja - Skepta's well-respected manager and recent receiver of a MBE for services to music - and South African arts and culture journalist Helen Herimbi (Rolling Stone South Africa, GQ South Africa, ARISE, The New Age). The pair will be covering Africa's place in global creative influence and DIY mentality across UK and Africa, as well as looking at the future creative landscape and the place of African creatives within it.
There will also be two panel conversations on issues relevant to the key territories: South Africa, Kenya and Cameroon. The first discussion - in partnership with OkayAfrica - will focus on the ways in which Digital Transformation across the continent has been catalysing creatives and we will be hearing from Jepchumba (listed by Forbes as one of the 20 Youngest Power Women in Africa 2012 and in The Guardian Africa’s Top 25 Women Achievers) as well as live performer and True Music Nairobi (May 2018) artist Muthoni Drummer Queen and founder of creative and digital magazine Unlabelled, Phendu Kuta.
The second panel is a deep dive into the impact of Club Culture on the Birth of New Genres and features Boni Mnisi (This Is What Makes Us Girls*), Theresho Selesho (Oppikoppi festival), South African hip hop DJ Kenzhero and underground top tip DJ Doowap.
We will be broadcasting each of the three sessions live here.
