For the next chapter for our Boiler Room x Ballantine's True Music Africa series, we're making a long-overdue stop at South Africa’s house music mecca, Pretoria. For a nation that is positively house-mad, Capital City has been a hotbed of musical excellence over the last 25-30 years, whose artists have not only conquered airwaves and radio sets in their own country, but have exported the SA take on the sound across the world.
From its significant early contributions to sounds such as Kwaito, to the snare-heavy beats of the late Mzansi legend DJ Spoko and his protege Mujava, through to the richly percussive deep house of Black Motion and current chart-topper DJ Maphorisa, and the broken soul of the new Amapiano movement, Pretoria has consistently punched above its weight, been at the cusp of innovation and kept the flame of house music truly ablaze.
For our show, we’ve invited the full spectrum of Pretorian talent. From certified legends such as Oskido, co-founder of seminal label Kalawa Jazmee and a key member of Kwaito crew Brothers Of Peace, through to Pretoria’s deep house underground king Kat La Kat, Maphorisa’s protege and Gqom maestro DJ Raybel, Pretorias deep house queen Lamiez Holworthy and Amapiano stars JD Monate & Mapentane.
Come ready to move!
