i’m stoked you opened this.
Newsletters are rough, so I’m gonna do my best to make this one as exciting as possible. You’re actually reading the online version of this, so if you want to subscribe to the next one after reading this, you can do so at the bottom of the page.
A lot of good stuff has been happening at Boiler Room lately, so if I can try to even share this with a fraction of you, it would make me beyond happy.
For the tl;dr crowd, I’ve made a mix to ride to. If you’re down to read on, bump this while you do.
my favorite breakfast show is back with a brand new episode
Breakfast with Ringgo is a concept born out of the days when we were roommates in Echo Park. Morning hours were spent smoking some tree, listening to beats made the previous night, chopping up some samples, or watching some weird shh online. That’s what this show is supposed to be.
For this episode, Ringgo is joined by guest Dominique Purdy aka the Koreatown Oddity, who’s hot off the heels of the release of his feature length film, Driving While Black. You can watch the show here, and read an interview I did with Dominique here.
at home with dam-funk
If there’s anyone I’m a longtime advocate of, it would be the man Dam-Funk. He’s an unbelievable artist, enigma, visionary — and undoubtedly one of the funnest people to work with, too. We had the pleasure of coming thru the modern funk pioneer’s west LA pad and getting an exclusive look at his record collection.
Dam-Funk’s upcoming album, Invite The Light, can be pre-ordered over at the Stones Throw store. He also played Boiler Room alongside DJ Quik, Danny Krivit, Mister Saturday Night, Nicky Siano and DJ Snoopadelic Thursday, 20th of August for our insane roller disco party with Ray-Ban – archive coming soon…
i really don’t care…
… is the name of my favorite song off Bilal’s freshly released, Adrian Younge produced album, In Another Life. He came through my spot one afternoon a few weeks back while he was in London, and chatted to our deputy editor Errol Anderson before blessing us with two acoustic renditions off his release — peep that here.
Bilal played Boiler Room again August 22nd, this time in New York for Afropunk After Dark — in New York for Afropunk After Dark – relooping now.
archive up: afta-1 + gifted & blessed
We’ve eagerly anticipated having these two talented folks on the show for a minute now; and they graced the stage in Los Angeles both as solo acts and as their joint project, SOMOS. A complementary visual installation was provided by Major Gape, making this session one that’s undeniably fun to rewatch.

on heavy rotation.
Stuff I’ve been really into lately comes in the form of (from left to right):
1. Seven Davis Jr’s Universes LP, out on Ninja Tune now
2. Jeremiah Jae’s The Decline of Black Anakin, available via the Black Jungle Squad bandcamp
3. Yuk’s debut release, Anak, available on cassette and vinyl now at Stones Throw
4. Madd Again’s MaddTing Vol. 1, forthcoming on Swing Ting but preview the glory over on our site
i been nice since creases in your pants
Also not one to miss… I dropped this track in my Stones Throw podcast last December, back when Breezy and Knx were Breezy and Knx and there were no worries (or tentatively titled Highland.Paak — shoutout Jeff Jank for that genius dub). I would get hit up on the daily with fools asking for what they called the “grits” song after that mix.
Anyway, as you probably know by now – Anderson Paak and Knxwledge are Nx.Worries, and the video for the “grits” song, aka Suede, dropped today.
he rap better than most dudes
most dudes do not rap
tap on they boat shoes
Sean Price’s passing came as a surprise to many of us, and his presence will be incredibly missed in the hip hop community and beyond. His 2013 freestyle with Prodigy at Chung King Studios has remained one of my favorite things we’ve ever had honor of documenting. Never fails to give me goosebumps.
You can make an official donation to his family via crowdfunding here; and his label Duck Down have created a special bundle package of his Songs In The Key Of Price mixtape.
