2016 was a symbolic year in the DIY and independent aesthetic. Frank Ocean self-released Blond. Skepta won the Mercury Prize. MIA arrived in London to celebrate the city's emergent DIY radio stations. More artists than ever shook off major label record deals in order to focus on writing their own rulebook.
We were joined by these innovators in the DIY space to discuss the rise & relevance of independence:
- Kieran Yates — Founder of British Values; journalist with The Guardian, Dazed, i-D
- K15 — DJ, Radio Host and Producer (Eglo, WotNot Music, Wild Oats)
- Aly Gillani — First Word Records label boss; Bandcamp's label liason
- Lily Mercer — DJ & presenter on Rinse RM / Beats1; founder of Viper Magazine
- Anastazja Moser — DJ & co-founder of Berlin Community Radio
- Mark Mulligan — Managing Director at leading media analysis hub Midia Research
