Make no bones about it, DJ Slimzee is the closest thing to a record-spinning demi-god that grime has. The reverent disciple of the Pay As U Go Cartel and founding member of Rinse FM is top contender for grime DJ’s fave grime DJ. In his time, he’s been chief disc jockey for the two best MCs – Dizzee Rascal and Wiley – and if ever there were a VIP dubplate to boast about, he was odds on favourite to have it shelved in his sizeable collection.

Fast-forward 10 years and grime sits within a totally different realm. 8-bar riddims are no longer confined to the cramped makeshift studio alcoves of pirate radio and grime-influenced verses humbug the mainstream charts. Rhythm Division – the seminal store for buying grime – has been defaced in place of a coffee stall. Even the very tools Slimzee used to make his name have irrevocably changed. Similarly, his life has had its changes. The first person to be handed a 5 year ASBO for operating a pirate radio station and forbidden by law from being on the roof of any building over four storeys, he was, in the process, banned from doing the thing he loved the most.
Somewhere out of that activity black hole, Slimzee has re-emerged amongst the electronic music new school. Over the last couple of years, bookings have become more frequent and geographically widespread. A bimonthly NTS Radio slot bragging consistent all-star run-ins has cropped up. Think back to mid-2014 and you’ll recollect Jackmaster calling on his services for a rampant, energy-fused return to XOYO.
Now, through friends, family, and artists who know him, London-based production company, Somesuch, have explored the early dedication, rise to fame, subsequent undoing and phoenix resurgence of a legend. Slimzee’s Going On Terrible is the Rollo Jackson-directed black and white ode to the king, layering interviews with grime royalty atop grime hymns like DJ Wonder’s “What” and Youngstar’s “Pulse X”. Faces such as Skepta, Jammer and Riko Dan are all on hand to spit praise about one of the genre’s most loyal servants.
