We love a bloody-minded labour of love – and those don’t come much more glorious than this. Old Glasgow friends Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Jackmaster – together with LuckyMe stalwarts Shaun and Eclair Fifi (who designed the Bonkers-style flyers), and DJs Cloudo and Mayhem – have never left behind their roots in nineties teenage raving to trance and happy hardcore. It’s there for all to see, especially in Rustie and HudMo’s own tunes (HudMo’s new album even has a collab with hardcore legend Gammer), and they had long been trying to work out how to properly pay tribute to these traditionally least fashionable but most enduring of styles. Finally last weekend, the planets (OK, their DJ schedules) aligned, and in a tiny Glasgow basement they played B2B2B2B2B all evening – the session was held early to evoke those original underage raves – celebrating the instant rush of the very purest of dance music.
Inspired by this session over on our Perspectives article, our Editor-in-Chief looks at the pointlessness of branding dance genres uncool, but for now, just enjoy the Buckfast, the hardcore dobbers and the non-stop pleasure of this perfectly-delivered set.
