Mule Musiq

A new audio mix series where we call upon the most interesting artists/DJs/record labels and ask them to peer into the near future. How they take it from there is entirely open to interpretation. This week we have a rare mix from the founder of arguably the greatest Japanese label of all time: Mule Musiq.

About this mix

I used 2x Pioneer CDJs and an Allen & Heath mixer, connected with great Oyaide cable.

This mix is made with mainly new material and I wanted to use only simple house music with a bit of different style, woven into contemporary stuff as well.

I have tried to release all kinds of good house music in the last 10 years – but I have also released some modern classical and ambient too. At heart, I want my label to be a bit different than other house music labels.

Take this mix as an introduction of what I'm doing on Mule Musiq and Endless Flight.

Toshiya Kawasaki

Boiler Room says...

Your starter for ten: What links Ivorian house don Mr Raoul K, no wave hero Lydia Lunch, Cluster founder Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and one of the most beloved mix series around? As you may have guessed, it’s Mule Musiq.

After fifteen years in the game – and with sister imprint nearing double digits – designer/promoter/A&R Toshiya Kawasaki’s brainchild has a legitimate claim to the title of most decorated Japanese label of all time. With close to 200 releases under arm, it’s irresistible to reel off some choice highlights: stellar mix-compilations from the likes of KZA and Optimo, plus six instalments of the in-house I'm Starting to Feel OK series; the first consummation of Henrik Schwarz & Bugge Wesseltoft’s union; and, in Midtown 120 Blues, one of the greatest albums of the century.

Naturally, there’s no plan to stop; Endless Flight, indeed. Across these ninety-odd minutes, Kawasaki-san offers forth exclusives from Frank & Tony, Prins Thomas and longtime affiliate Kuniyuki Takahashi; moving from stirring orchestral flourishes and windchimes into cosmic territory, spinning outward with a track that tips its hat to one of Tokyo’s finest clubs.

The pacing affords each track breathing room, allowing melodic lines to thread across the gossamer surface as the mix unhurriedly unspools. So effectively, the most Mule Musiq mix imaginable: a total joy.
