Zap Francis “Scuffer”

Not much is known of Zap Francis, and the little that we do know only seems to shroud Zap further in mystery. Fragments from the self-titled Zap Francis EP first dropped onto our laps in Black Milk’s Boiler Room set last summer. On being asked where Mr. Milk discovered the tracks dropped in his set, he laid it down as simply as “Zap Francis gave them to me.” So who is this Zap guy, and why’s it taken over a year for his big (D/)debut to surface?

Though we wish we had the answers, what we can confirm is that it was well worth the wait. Zap Francis – forthcoming on Bleep’s own label – embodies multiple dimensions of modern-age instrumental hip hop. The EP’s beatsy opening track, “Scuffer”, sets the mood instantly, with clickety-click shuffles of the hi-hat and a persistent, undulating synth line overhead. Zap marks his breakthrough on a strong footing that – we pray – will keep the momentum going for many more releases to come.

Zap Francis drops (digi + vinyl) on October 2nd. Head here to do what’s right.
