Tito Ramos “Big T” (Joe Claussell Remix)

A barrage of superlatives enter the mind when discussing Fania Records. During a remarkable two-decade run, Fania was responsible for ushering in some of the finest records, each of them marinated in the richest of Latin flavours.

Having disappeared after their 70s heyday, a revival is afoot. Today they’re now working with the likes of Louie Vega, Sabo and others, giving them unprecedented access to original multi-track recordings from the classic catalogue. Salsa? Latin funk? The whole Fania DNA — featuring legends like Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon and more — is at their disposal.

New York chief, Joe Claussell, exemplifies how good these two worlds can collide. “Big T” — originally an upbeat funk number by Tito Ramos — shapeshifts into a similarly upbeat four-to-the-floor jive under Claussell’s guidance. And as we excitedly prepare to lift the curtain on our Fania Records Presents Calentura showcase from MoMa PS1 in just under two hours, we couldn’t have asked for a better introduction.
